What is Motivational Interviewing (MI)?

Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a collaborative, goal-oriented communication approach that helps people strengthen their own motivation and commitment to change. Instead of directing or advising, the coach uses open-ended questions, reflective listening, and affirmations to help individuals explore their values, goals, and ambivalence around change.

MI focuses on drawing out the person’s own reasons for change and supporting autonomy, confidence, and self-efficacy. By encouraging “change talk,” the approach helps people clarify what matters to them and move toward meaningful, self-directed action.
